Medical Marijuana Officially Coming to Alabama
Congratulations, Alabama! Governor Kay Ivey signed SB 46 into law on May 17, clearing the way for the establishment of a legal medical marijuana market here for those who get an Alabama marijuana card.
Under the new law, Alabamians who suffer from one of more than a dozen qualifying conditions and obtain a doctor’s approval will be able to get a state-issued marijuana card. Once they have those cards, Alabamians will be able to purchase medical marijuana at one of up to twelve state-licensed dispensaries.
Alabama's State Legislature had voted to pass the legislation on May 6, and the governor has been reviewing the bill since.
The House version of the bill passed 68-34 with bipartisan support after a vote had first been blocked by Republicans during a debate lasting nearly nine-hours. The Senate, which passed the first version of the bill in February, overwhelmingly voted to pass the House’s amended version of the bill.
In a statement issued after she signed the bill, Governor Ivey said, “Signing SB 46 is an important first step. [...] As research evolves, [it is critical] to continue finding ways to work on this to ensure we have a productive, safe and responsible operation in Alabama.”
Although the law goes into effect immediately, it is likely to be some time before the market is established and consumers can actually exercise their newfound right.
Representative Mike Ball, a former state trooper and opponent of legalization who went on to co-sponsor SB 46, told the Associated Press “We’ve still got another year or so before this gets set up and cranked up, but at least we have hope now.”
